On 14 March 2023, the UK Medicines regulator approved an application to reclassify the erectile dysfunction medication Zovirax from prescription-only use 25mg do daily to ‘do’ tablets (Dosage Cards) under 16 for women and 25mg for men. When marketed as a 14% efficacy reduction (the 2.5mg tablet is now the lowest effective dose for a 14 year-old age bracket), this means that many women across the UK will be able to make use of the savings giant’s ( yet another big name brand name ) new prescription-only treatment ‘Zovirax’.
However, it is currently unknown exactly when this decision will be made, and whether it will be followed by more than a few weeks of generic dosing for younger women. It is understood that this decision will be made within days of the first approved indication for the Zovirax treatment, as Dosing is now only available in adolescents under 14 years old.
The reclassification means that Zovirax will be available as a prescription-only treatment within the UK pharmacy without a generic equivalent. However, because the patent on this drug expired in June 2022, it is now possible to buy generic Zovirax without a prescription.
On 14 September 2023, the UK Medicines regulator (RH), again sift up the need for a reclassification application, again application from the applicationseeking approval of the Zovirax treatment.
However, because the application was not clear if this would be followed by more than a few weeks of generic dosing for a 14 year-old female, it was not possible to determine if a reclassification application would be successful.

However the review found that dosing in men (which is only available by prescription) is still effective. In the UK, dosing is only available by prescription for 14 year old adolescents. This means that when marketed as a ‘Zovirax’ it would mean that many women will be able to use the treatment in the first place.

In response to the review, the application was transferred to the UK Pharmacopoeia in October 2023. This means that many women in the review would be able to apply the new treatment, dosing as young as 14 years old, and make their Zovirax dosage. However, this application was only made after the review had heard about the reclassification application and was waiting for a date to be set before making a decision.
Under current legislation, adult prescription-only treatments (other than medicines) are not allowed in the UK. This means that women can only buy treatment from licensed pharmaceutical companies and that women can only use these medicines from 16 December 2021.
Prices for Zovirax in the UK are currently unregulated and on the back of strict marketing and safety standards. These include a high safety profile and inadequate oversight of dosages, dosing regimens, and duration of treatment.

For the duration of the shingles infection, the patient is given 5 days’ post treatment for a mild to moderate skin rash with blisters. The patient should continue taking the drug for the full 5 days of shingles, even if they feel better. Acicloviris contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to acyclovir or any other component of this medication. In general, children are not under treatment for the oral administration of acyclovir. The Zovirax Cold Sore Study is an oral fixed-dose fixed-face clinical trial conducted in the weeks to5 monthsafter its cessation of therapy and at the doses of 200 mg, 300 mg, and 400 mg, it can be assumed that in patients with a general sense of well-being, it can be assumed that the effect of acyclovir is dose related and not dose dependent. The effect of acyclovir can be estimated from several assumptions by taking into account all the factors that may determine the outcome of the trial (age, medical history, treatment duration, and any other variables considered as influencing the outcome).
